“Start of Something New” is the first song in the original High School Musical. A new rendition of the song was featured in “The Auditions!” the first episode of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series sung by Olivia Rodrigo as Nini Salazar-Roberts.

In the spin-off series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, the song is performed by students Nini (Olivia Rodrigo), E.J. (Matt Cornett) and Gina (Sofia Wylie) as their audition song to star in East High's production of High School Musical. An acoustic version featuring Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett was also recorded and uploaded on DisneyMusicVevo's channel on YouTube.
Summary[]
When E.J. cheers on Nini on her audition, this causes Ms. Jenn to react and spill her drink on the control panel. Ms. Jenn says she will just have to sing without lights. Nini sings this with a piano at the first verse. Then Ricky lights on his phone flashlight following E.J. doing the same causing already a rivalry. Ricky's light fades into a spotlight. As mentioned earlier in the episode, Nini is on the stage, with a red dress and spotlights everywhere but she doesn't sing. This is what happened but Nini actually sings the song. At the outro, the scene fades back to the auditorium with the lights back on.
