Background

I wrote it on my guitar in my living room. I think I was just having one of those days, where you think of one embarassing thing that you’ve done and just, suddenly, it snowballs into every cringey thing that you’ve ever done in your entire life, and I was just, like, “Oh my God, this is so bad,” just playing it back over and over in my head, and so I wrote this song. I think it’s a very fun one, a little sweet pop song. It’s one of my favorites on the record and, actually, the last one that we added to the album. I think we added it three days before we had to turn it in or something. And sometimes, the best songs on albums come very last second, I think, for whatever reason. A demo of the song has been confirmed to exist.

Theme

“love is embarrassing” candidly explores the rollercoaster of emotions and self-discovery during a tumultuous teenage romantic relationship. The song poignantly captures the awkward and sometimes stressful experience of navigating love, self-worth and emotions during youth.

The song expresses the feeling of embarrassment after prioritising and valuing a lover and a relationship that was ultimately not worth the effort, especially during the bridge where Olivia states that he isn’t worth anything and is a loser not even worth mentioning.
