"Gross" is an unreleased song by Olivia Rodrigo that was most likely to be intended to be on her debut studio album, SOUR, but it was later scrapped.

Background

Olivia posted a clip of this song on March 19th, 2020 on Instagram with the caption "quarantine means more writing!!!! here’s 'gross' lol". Later, in a livestream for MTV's Alone Together Jam Session on April 22nd, 2020, she performed the whole song.

It is heavily rumoured that a studio version has been recorded

Theme

The song is a love letter to someone, rumoured to be her High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star Joshua Bassett. There have been no evidences to substantiate this claim. She mentions his "brown eyed grin and messy hair" in one verse and says he's her best friend, which is something that Olivia and Joshua said about each other in many interviews, leading to these claims.

Olivia also mentions traffic, how she feels "all grown up" driving in the 'it' guy's car, and how she brings him up in every conversation, unintentionally writing a prequel to her debut single and smash hit "Drivers License", that talks about their rumored breakup.
