Astronaut was first discovered when Olivia Rodrigo talked about it in an interview, she stated that she wrote the song at the age of 14.

A snippet of the song was leaked sometime on 2023 while the title was still unknown, it was also being sold in a leak site but the post was later taken down, when it was being sold it was described as a "finished song" and that it was recorded in 2023, this made people think it was intended for GUTS but later confirmed that it was false.

A snippet of the song was reposted on October 7, 2023 which made the song be forceleaked on the same day.
